This is by far my favorite, go-to summer recipe. It’s fairly easy: just cut up some vegetables and meat, make the sauce, and get grillin’! The sauce is sweet and salty (kinda like a Teriyaki sauce, but a bit different) and the perfect sauce to marry the bell peppers, onion, and sirloin.
This sauce recipe is based on an old (and no longer) Outback Steakhouse dish. Once upon a time, I used to get something similar to this at Outback and LOVED it. It was the only reason I went there. Now that it’s gone, I haven’t been in many years. But, last September I was trying to drum up some recipe ideas for Derek and me, and I remembered this amazing dish. I tried to look up a copycat of it, but alas, no one but me seems to remember it. So, based on my distant memories, I created this. Now, it may not be exactly like it, but I doubt anyone remembers what these things tasted like since they have been gone for so long. Regardless, this is a yummy dish that I adore and hope you do too.
On a side note, (c’mon, you had to have known by now that this was going to turn into story time and not just be a simple recipe) Derek first met my parents at an Outback. We were supposed to go to a different restaurant, but the wait was horrendous. So, we looked for close by restaurants and decided to go to Outback as they had no wait at all (odd, but it ended up filling up before we left).
When we got to Outback, I realized they no longer had the only dish I had ever tried and therefore enjoyed from them. I quickly realized I would have to try something…NEW. I do not like trying new things at places I already liked something at. I always get FOMO (but for food, that’s a thing right?) in that I’ll pick the wrong dish and the people I’m with will have infinitely better dishes than me, and it’ll be a sad day. For anyone not absolutely in love with food, you may not understand this, but for me food is everything. I love trying new dishes (yes, it’s a weird thing new dishes and I, but whatevs) and really look forward to a tasty meal.
So, not only was I stressed about Derek meeting my family (not really, my family is chill AF), but now I had to try something…NEW. Plot twist, I got something new, did not enjoy it, and ended up eating Derek’s (he was sweet back then, now it takes a lot more pleading and eyelash batting to get any food from this kid). But alas, those were the old days and now I can eat the meal I really enjoy anytime I please in the comfort of my home. So take that Outback for removing the one thing I love (I’m just kidding, I still love you guys and your GF brownies).
If you’re wondering, the meeting with my family went great. My parents love and adore Derek and treat him like their own son. They are always sending him gifts and calling to ask about him, and it’s great.
Anywho, back to the recipe, I bet you forgot all about (I sure did). This recipe is great for date night or a family BBQ. I’m sure you could replace the protein with chicken, or something else. Plus, If it’s a cold day and you want some grillin’ vibes, just pop the vegetables coated in a bit of oil into an oven with the broiler on, cook the steak in a skillet, add sauce during the last minute of cooking, and serve!
Grilled Steak Kebabs with Sweet Soy Glaze
Get grillin' this summer with this deliciously easy, sweet and salty Kebab recipe.
- 1 1/2-2 lbs. sirloin steak (top or petite)
- 1 1/2 red bell peppers (or your favorite color, I just think red has the best flavor)
- 1/2 cup (4 oz) soy sauce (use a gluten-free brand, we use La Choy)
- 1/8 cup (1 oz) Worcestershire sauce (not all Worcestershire sauce is GF, check your labels carefully, and replace with this recipe if you can’t find any)
- 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Red Robin seasoning (or another type of burger/fry seasoning like Freddy’s, or just skip it)
- 2/3 cup (~135 grams) brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- A sprinkle of white pepper
- Make the sauce. Mix the soy sauce, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, Red Robin seasoning, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and white pepper in a small saucepan.
- Reduce sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil and then lower to a simmer and let reduce as you continue with the below steps. The sauce probably won’t reduce a ton but should become sticky and a bit thicker.
- Preheat grill. Start preheating your grill to high. Once it is hot, don’t forget to give it a quick scrape before you begin cooking.
- Start Side. I highly recommend these kebabs with rice. If you are making rice, I would recommend preparing it now so it will be finished by the time the kebabs are done on the grill.
- Cube steak. Cube your sirloin into bite-sized pieces, or cut into small strips that you can fold in half and skewer.
- Cut the bell pepper and onion. Cut the bell pepper and onion into large bite-sized pieces that should be a similar size to the meat.
- Skewer! Once all the meat and veggies are cut up, start skewering. You want to start and end with meat as it will not slide off the skewer as easily as the pepper or onion will, thus holding everything in place. We skewered ours as so: meat, onion (2 pieces), bell pepper, meat, onion (2 pieces), bell pepper, you get the idea.
- Portion Sauce. Take 2/3 of the now (semi) reduced sauce with you to the grill. Leave the other 1/3 of sauce to drizzle over the finished kebabs.
- Grill. Start grilling by placing each kebab over a grill that has been pre-heated to high. Close the lid and leave for 1 minute to 1 minute and 30 seconds. Open the lid and flip the skewers over. Brush sauce onto the now cooked side of the kebab. Once you have finished saucing one side of each kebab, close the lid and cook for another minute to 1 minute and 30 seconds. Then, flip these bad boys once more, give em another brushing of sauce and take them off the heat!
- Enjoy. Remove the meat and veggies from the skewer, drizzle with remaining sauce, and enjoy with a side of rice. [/recipe-directions]
